Day 6: The Blues Brothers

Today I watched a fairly old movie, made in 1980. It was really good though, hilarious! Its based around music too which is even better because im a music person. "Joliet" Jake Blues (John Belushi) is released from prison after serving three years for armed robbery. When his brother Elwood (Dan Aykroyd) picks him up he is very irritated because Elwood is in the "bluesmobile" (an old police car) instead of the Cadillac the brothers used to own. The brothers visit their childhood home, a Roman Catholic orphanage, and learn that it will be closed unless $5,000 is collected. The brothers visit a church service where Jake has an idea that they can raise the funds by re-forming their rhythm and blues band.
Elwood's crazy driving alerts two police troopers who see he has a suspended license. But when they attempt to arrest him he speeds off, escaping through the Dixie Square Mall! As the brothers arrive at the small house where Elwood lives, a mystery woman launches a bazooka attack but leaves them unharmed. The next morning, she detonates a bomb that demolishes the building, which also fails to injure the brothers and saves them from being arrested. Jake and Elwood begin tracking down members of the band.  On the way to find the guitarist they drive through a rally of  "The Illinois Nazis", adding another enemy to the brothers growing list.
After all of the old members decided to rejoin, Marini and Murphy meet are at a soul food restaurant which Murphy owns with his wife. Against her advice, the two musicians leave and rejoin the band. The reunited group get instruments and equipment from a pawn shop on a loan. So now they owe the pawn shop... and they need $5,000! And this is just the beginning, so if you want to see what happens next you should watch the movie. It gets CRAZY! Let me just say the Bluesmobile runs out of gas on the way to a gig making Jake and Elwood late, THEN at the gig they see that all the concert-goers are their list of enemies and a ton of police officers. So watch the movie! Heres a trailer!

Day 5: Black Swan

Today I watched Black Swan, and it was ridicilously great! It was mind blowing, I actually walked away saying, "WHAT the heck just happened!?" A ballet company in NYC is performing Black Swan, and the lead ballerina must performe both the white swan and the black swan. Nina Sayers, a dancer, is picked to compete for the part along with other young dancers including newcomer Lily. Nina lives with her mother Erica, a failed dancer who tries to control pretty much all of Nina's life. The ballet director, Thomas Leroy, is reluctant to cast Nina because he claims that she is the perfect White Swan with perfect technique, but that she lacks the dark and passion of the Black Swan. So then during a confrontation over the role Thomas kisses Nina and she bites his lip. This makes him give her the lead role over all the other ballerinas.
Nina begins to go a little crazy, having strong delusions and extremely visual hallucinations! She feels paranoid that Lily, is determined to take the lead away from her. On the other hand Thomas becomes  critical of Nina's frigid dancing as the Black Swan, and tells her that she should stop being so perfect and simply lose herself in the Black Swan role.
The rest of the movie is really really crazy! One night Lily appears at Nina's door and pressures Nina to go out on the town for a bit for a drink. Nina turns her down at first, but after her mother's pushiness to get rid of Lily, she quickly leaves. She comes home drunk, and the next morning she arrives late to rehersal and finds Lily dancing as the Swan Queen in her place. The night before opening, Nina is rehearsing late and continues to hallicinate. When she returns home she sees her mother's paintings speaking and mocking her. She also notices that the rash on her shoulder has worsened, with little black barbs poking through her skin. Nina pulls one of the barbs from her skin and it appears to be a black feather. Nina's eyes appear to turn into reddish swan eyes and her legs violently contort into the shape of a swan's. As she tries to control herself, she falls and knocks herself out on her bedpost. I dont want to spoil anymore! But it gets so much better, and crazier! This movie is rated R, for some sexuality and cussing. But you should watch it because its freakin amazing. I really enjoyed it becuase once again, i walked away saying, "what just happened?!" Dare to watch the trailer?

Day 4: Masters of horror- Cigarette Burns

Sorry about being behind two days, my internet was down. Todays movie was pretty scary/freaky! John Carpenter's Cigarette Burns is foremost a story about allowing oneself to be consumed by obsession. There's a lot of obsessive behavior in this film, and at the root of it all is the obsession with film itself. Being that the reigning obsession that unites these characters is cinephilia, there's a self-reflexive quality to the film- a movie about movie-watching, but it's not in a cutesy or insistent way like the Scream films. It is a film that understands the peculiar obsessions of the cinephile. Jean-Luc Godard once said, "The cinema is life, and I would really love to live life as I do cinema." If cinema is life, as it is for the characters in this film, is it then also death?
Questions like these are far from the mind of Kirby Sweetman (Norman Reedus) when he travels to the house of one Mr. Ballinger (Udo Kier) at the outset of this story. Kirby owns a failing revival house and is deeply in debt to his late girlfriend's father; to supplement his income, he has become a rare-film finder, a celluloid detective. Ballinger, who collects rare films and related paraphernalia, isn't long for this world by his admission, and he has one last thing he wants before he dies: a print of Le Fin Absolue du Monde. Kirby thinks that impossibility - the premiere of Monde saw the audience riot and burn down the theater, taking the print with it. Ballinger says he can prove that there's still an extant print of Monde somewhere in the world, which he does in a creepy and funny scene, and Kirby agrees to take the job. As he searches for Monde, he is forced to confront demons from his past. But as it turns out, the rumored psychological effects of the cursed film may be true! As Kirby goes from place to place and person to person,  Kirby learns something new about Monde from everyone he meets.
Its really hard to blog about this movie because its really hard to explain, kind of like Inception... but even worse haha. The title for instance, comes from the little circles in the right-hand corner of a celluloid print that signal to the projectionist that it's time to change reels. As Kirby gets closer to the mysterious film he begins to hallucinate these cigarette burns, telling him that Monde is changing his subjective reality.
I thought this movie was really weird! I wouldn't watch it again, but if you havent seen it its kind of a movie that you want to see just because its so weird. But if your not into seeing gory scenes I dont suggest watching this movie! The characters in Cigarette Burns, because of their obsessive natures, cannot resist seeking death, and for seeing the unseeable, they are each brought to their own demise. It's the end of the world as they know it. If your still interested, here is a tralier. Thanks for reading!

Day 3: Finding Nemo

YAY! This is my favorite Disney movie! I can't tell you how many times I'v cried watching this :( But anyway! Finding Nemo is a great movie. Marlin, a daddy clownfish, lost his wife and all his baby fish except one... Nemo. Marlin is overly protective of Nemo since it's his only son. Well on Nemo's first day at school, he disobeys his father and swims off away from the reef to touch a boat. Marlin is full of rage now and starts to swim after him until he see's a scuba diver capture him. He tries to follow the boat but gets lost along the way and meets Dory, a fish with short term memory loss. So now the both of them are in search of Nemo who is now in a fish tank in a Sydney Harbour dentist office. Their, he meets the "Fish Tank Gang". They hear his story on how hes lost from his father and they try and help by having him do a risky job of jamming the tank's filter and forcing the dentist to remove the fish from the tank while he cleans it himself. By doing that the dentist will have to put the fish in plastic bags, and Nemo can roll off the table, out the window, and into the ocean! But the plan goes all wrong and Nemo almost kills himself.
Really sad right?!?! I know! BUT IT GETS BETTER! And even more sad, unfortunately :( If you've already seen the movie, you should watch it again because I hadn't watched it since I was like 8 maybe, haha. And I really enjoyed it, it brought back memories of childhood. So you should watch it again, or if you haven't seen it at all, DEFINITELY watch it! Here is a trailer!

Day 2: Inception

This is my favorite movie of 2010, honestly.  I'v seen it 5 times and I really recommend seeing it if you like mind boggling movies. It kind of confused me at first, you really have to pay attention. Leonardo DiCaprio plays as Dom Cobb who is the main character. GREAT, great actor for this part. Cobb has been charged for the murder of his wife and can not go back to the United States to see his two children until he has that cleared. All he can really do is work. His job is to enter his enemies dreams to find out information. He's aiming for inception, which is planting a whole idea inside the mind.  Mr. Saito, a man who needs Cobb to perform inception, says if he completes this task he will clear his murder charge and send him home.
Still following me here? I know, i didn't understand it at first either. But its a great movie, I promise! Hopefully i didn't spill too much. This post doesn't have as much detail as the other one does because i figured a lot of people have already seen this movie. Its still a phenomenal movie, so you should watch it again! Also, here are a few links I really like- if you want to watch traliers, read more on the movie, or get an explination on the ending/dream world rules/ and more! They're really cool, check em' out.
TRAILERS!
may i have an... EXPLANATION?

Day 1: The King's Speech

This is my first blog entry, and I am pretty excited! I'm learning all the ways to use this cite, but I'v never written a blog before... so this should be interesting. Everyday for a whole week I'm going to blog about a movie I watched that day, starting today. Today I saw The King's Speech staring Colin Firth, Helena Bonham carter, and Geoffrey Rush. Colin Firth is the main character: Prince Albert- The Duke of York, or later known as "King George Vl". His father is King George V, and is soon going to pass away from old age. Albert has had a very bad stammer problem every since he was little, and everyone knows you can't be a king if you cant speak! So his wife Elizabeth (Helena) takes him to a speech therapist, who suggests smoking and speaking with marbles in his mouth. Albert decides to quit seeking any further help once he almost chokes on the marbles. But Elizabeth doesn't quit and finds an Australian speech therapist named Lionel (Geoffrey) who is positive he can help the Duke. He records Albert reading Shakespeare while blasting music into his ears. This is where the movie starts to really get great! I don't want to tell you what happens next, so you should just go see the movie yourself! Its definitely on my top list of movies to see twice. Looking for a trailer? Here!
